Speaker: Dr. B. Lynn Ferguson
President, Deformation Control Technology, Inc., Cleveland Ohio“Residual Stress in Hardened Steel Parts”
Residual stress is a natural consequence of hardening steel parts. The phase transformations that occur during heat treating and are necessary to produce a hard, strong part cause stress during the quenching process. The manufacturer has to deal with the stress, either proactively by anticipating the magnitude, distribution and the impact on part dimensions, or after the fact by additional manufacturing steps such as straightening or grinding. The heat treater can assist by tailoring the quench process to improve part performance by the imposition of beneficial surface compressive residual stress which enhances fatigue life.
This presentation will use simulation of the quench hardening process to examine the origins of residual stress and show how the process can be tailored to minimize the problems associated with stress during quenching and maximize the benefits of residual compression in part application. Processes briefly discussed will include immersion quenching, gas quenching and induction hardening. Alloys will include both carburizing and through-hardening low alloy steels.
B. Lynn Ferguson is President of Deformation Control Technology, Inc., a small engineering business that provides comprehensive thermal, mechanical and metallurgical services to the metalworking industry. He is a graduate of Drexel University (BS, MS & PhD in Metallurgical Engineering), and prior to forming DCT in 1982 he worked at Republic Steel’s Research Center and at TRW’s Colwell Engineering Center. For the past 20 years he has focused on computer simulation of steel heat treatment processes. He is active in ASMI, and is currently on the Board of HTS and he is Chairman of HTS’s Education Committee. He is also a Fellow of ASMI.
