Mitch Dorfman has been a member of Sulzer Metco Research and Development Team for 30 years. He holds a Masters in Materials Science and B. S. in Mechanical Engineering, SUNY at Stony Brook, NY, U. S. A. His area of expertise lies in materials development and application support for thermal spray materials. He has developed and commercialized HOSP manufacturing process at Sulzer Metco. Mr. Dorfman has developed YSZ ceramic powders, compressor and turbine abradable, carbide powders for the turbine and industrial markets in Thermal Spray. He has published over 60 technical papers and has15 patents. He is a reviewer of technical papers for Journal of Thermal Spray Technology (JTST) and is the present ASM TSS President and Board Member. Mr. Dorfman has been an ASM member since 1988.

Topic: Practical Understanding of Materials for Thermal Spray Applications

Thermal spray technology has been used successfully for many years in various wear resistant applications. The technical success of an application is based not only on the correct thermal spray process and parameters, but also on a clear understanding of the wear mechanism(s) associated with the application and the proper material selection. Based on this fundamental understanding, powders can be selected to meet specific application needs. This presentation will discuss various WC-Co(Cr) and WC-Co(Cr) self-fluxing alloy powders that are presently in the market place. Important characteristics related to powders for wear applications are: 1) primary carbide grain size, 2) overall powder particle size, 3) manufacturing process, 4) matrix chemistry, and 5) powder density. Low and high angle erosion, adhesive wear, abrasive wear and fretting are just a few of the types of wear mechanisms reviewed in order to help grow applications in industrial markets such as agricultural, paper and pulp, hydroelectric, and hard chrome alternatives.
